There is a unique nostalgia in walking back into the news TV studio you once called home. My colleagues and I started Good Morning Northland, which I anchored and spent many years as a broadcast journalist. Recently, I had the pleasure to be interviewed at WDIO’s The Lift.
But this time, I wasn’t there to report the news. I was there to make it.
As the owner of Surge Communications, Innovations & Online Services (Surge), I’ve spent the last several weeks heading up the marketing efforts for the Rotary Club’s upcoming Duluth Skyline Rotary Club’s Rock the Skyline concert. My appearance on The Lift was more than just a trip down memory lane; it was an example of how professional marketing fuels event success.
The Broadcast Edge: Storytelling with Impact
In my years in new anchoring, I learned how to capture an audience’s attention in as little as a 30-second soundbite. In the world of marketing, that skill is a superpower. When you are planning a large-scale event, you aren’t just selling tickets—you are telling a story.
Whether it’s a TV segment, a social media campaign, or a press release, the goal is to create a “Surge” of excitement that moves people to action. At Surge, we use our broadcast background to ensure our clients’ messages aren’t just heard—they are remembered.
Successful event marketing involves:
- Identifying the Right Partners: Connecting businesses with causes that reflect their values.
- Demonstrating ROI: Showing sponsors exactly how their brand will surge in visibility through our media outlets.
- Execution: Ensuring that when the music starts and beverages are poured, every sponsor feels like a hero of the night.
Surge Your Success: Service Above Self
As the Public Image Chair for Duluth Skyline Rotary Club and also Rotary District 5580 Public Image Chair – Elect and Surge also acting as Marketing/Communications and Newsletter Editor for the District, I am passionate about using my professional “Surge” to lift up the community. Marketing and event planning are some of the engines that allow non-profits to do their best work. When the branding is tight, the message is clear, and the media buzz is high, the results speak for themselves.I am incredibly proud to be back working on “Rock the Skyline” this year after a short hiatus. If you saw the segment on The Lift, you know the energy is building. If you didn’t, take a look at my segment from The Lift for a humorous interaction when they showed a video of my anchoring years, unbeknownst to me. That was fun to see but also a surprise, which made me feel flustered for the rest of the interview! 🙂 Still the message got out!
